Naval Postgraduate School (1978-80)
Misson: provides defense-focused graduate education to advance the operational effectiveness, technological leadership and warfighting advantage of the Naval service. It is a requirement for all Engineering Duty Officers. My goal: MSEE-Digital Systems.
Degree Granted: MSEE w/ high honors
I originally thought I’d get a MS-Computer Science. The Navy wanted MSEE Monterey offered both rigorous study and a beautiful setting for personal and professional growth. Uh oh, this means assigned to WashDC.
Residence — Woodbridge, VA (1980–1991)
We decided to buy while still in CA. Nice to have an Uncle who moved 20+ times in his CIA career available to tour. Our home in Woodbridge became a place of stability, family life, and milestones, including my own businesses.
Birth or William Godar Hess (1981)
Will was born at Bethesda Naval Hospital, a joyful milestone, conceived in Monterey and born at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda MD. His arrival marked the beginning of my journey as a father. (His middle name is Anne’s maiden name.)
NAVELEXSYSCOM HQ — Washington, DC (1980–1982)
First DC Assignment: Naval Electronic Systems Command - Computer Resources Division. Serving as a Combat Systems Requirements Engineer placed us at the center of next generation computers in Navy electronic systems. This command is now SPAWARSYSCOM
NAVSEASYSCOM HQ — Crystal City (1982–1987)
Assigned to the Engineering Duty Officer Program Office (and part time cross-assigned back to NAVELEX), I supported computer acquisition programs during the Reagan-era buildup. It was a period of intense professional responsibility and growth.
Birth of Daughter — Katherine Jeanne Hess (1984-2006)
Katherine’s birth brought immense joy and pride. Her beauty, intelligence, determination, and spirit made her a remarkable young woman whose memory continues to inspire me. Nothing could deter her from a goal.
Promotion to Lieutenant Commander (1982)
Promotion to LCDR (Major in other services) in the Navy is a strong indication that one is committed to a long career on active duty. Surprise - I resigned my Active commission for a Reserve Commission just 4 years later to pursue Entrepreneurship.
