Great Sand Dunes National Park (Colorado)

Nowhere else in North America do 750-foot shifting sand dunes collide directly against the snow-capped, jagged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Visitors can sandboard down towering crests before cooling off in the braided currents of seasonal Medano Creek at the dune base. The region holds deep cultural ties to early indigenous nomads, historic Spanish trade routes, and dark-sky stargazing opportunities certified by the International Dark-Sky Association. It is a stark, surreal geological contrast that feels entirely disconnected from the surrounding high desert.
